ABOFE exists to help define professional standards, support credibility, and advance recognition for the funeral escort profession — strengthening an industry that serves families at their most vulnerable moments.
ABOFE exists to help professionalize and strengthen the funeral escort industry — supporting the credibility of operators who are already doing this work with care, and building the frameworks that will help the profession be recognized and respected at a national level.
The initiative is currently in its founding stage, bringing together experienced escort professionals to help shape a shared operational framework for the profession.
The American Board of Funeral Escorting (ABOFE) is a developing professional standards initiative for the funeral escort profession. We are working to bring greater consistency, credibility, and recognition to an industry that plays a critical role in honoring the deceased and supporting grieving families.
Funeral escort operations occur at a unique intersection of public safety and sacred ceremony. ABOFE recognizes the gravity of that intersection and the responsibility it places on every escort professional who enters a public roadway on behalf of a family in mourning.
Through the development and publication of the Funeral Escort Operations Standard, ABOFE is contributing a shared operational framework to the profession — one that defines what good outcomes look like without dictating how individual operators achieve them.
Our work is driven by a single conviction: that every family deserves an escort operation conducted with care, safety, and professional integrity. That conviction is what started ABOFE — and it is what will carry it forward.
A shared operational framework for funeral escort operations on public roadways. It defines what good outcomes look like — not how to achieve them — giving any escort operation a professional foundation to build on. Version 2.4 is published and available now.

ABOFE is in its founding phase. Here is exactly where things stand.
ABOFE is not a governing body and does not seek to control the profession. It is a serious, organized effort to help strengthen it — and that distinction matters.
The standard exists. The work is underway. What it grows into depends on the professionals, organizations, and voices who choose to get involved at this early stage.
Being early is not a weakness. Showing up organized, honest, and intentional is exactly how a profession begins to take itself seriously.
We are actively seeking founding voices. If you care about where this profession is headed, this is the moment to engage.
